GTA V 3095 - Recovering from Update

Why is your game crashing after Update 3095?

There are many possible reasons, so let's explore the most common one. We will talk about how to fix this issue and most importantly what you can do to prevent it for next time. Remember that at least until GTA VI is launched, GTA V is updated regularly twice per year. So read on or expect future problems.

The issue:  You copied over the new update.rpf from the 3095 version to your mods folder.

Good intentions, but bad advice. You did this after watching a dumb YouTube video or even dumber forum post somewhere. It might even have been OpenIV that displayed a message encouraging you to update update.rpf for your mods folder?

Is updating update.rpf really a bad thing?

Yes and no. If you're planning on updating permanently, then you will indeed need to update update.rpf (and update2.rpf). This will allow you to stay updated and enjoy the latest DLC- assuming that's what you want. This is particularly important for GTA Online enthusiasts.

What about the "no" part? When you copy update.rpf, from the new game to your mods folder, you're overwriting (replacing, deleting) all the existing files installed, edited, or customized. This includes your dlclist.xml. As a result you're essentially preventing all your dlc addon mods from loading, addons like peds, vehicles, and maps.

Can I fix this mess?

Of course and thankfully you can. You will need to recreate your dlclist.xml and possibly reinstall other mods. The good news is that your addons are still intact in your dlcpacks folder.

How do I prevent this for next time, like the summer update in 2024?

Simply by backing up key files in the future, including your update.rpf or at least your dlclist.xml. You can read more here:  Avoiding GTA 5 Update Headaches and here GTA 5 Updates FAQ - Need To Know

I did everything correctly but your game is still crashing?

There are many other reasons your game will crash after a game update including the need for a new gameconfig.xml mod and because existing mods or scripts are no longer compatible with the updated version of GTA V. You can read more here:  GTA 5 Still Crashing After Update?
