Help!

This site, and our sister sites, do their best to solve your GTA 5 modding problems. Unfortunately we can't cover everything that can go wrong. We certainly can't solve all the specific issues with the thousands of mods and scripts out there. If you can't find your answer here, we suggest you post on forums (see links below) - and if you do, these guidelines might help you, to get the help you need.

Here are some useful tips and suggestions, when asking for help, by doing your part first.

  1. Forum Search. Why not start by searching the forum? It's very likely that your issue has been posted once, or many times before, hopefully with resolution.

  2. Google. If you can't find the issue or topic on the forums, next try Google or your favourite engine. While the help offered on some Youtube videos might be hit or miss, there are many excellent tutorials or "how to's" ranging from scripting, to modelling, to codewalker MLOs, interiors, and YMAPs, etc.

  3. Discord. Often mod creators will offer you help on their Discord servers.

  4. Comment Pages. If your problem is with a specific mod, check its comment page, where you download, to see if others have the same issue, if there are solutions, or to ask the mod creator assuming he is still alive and active.

Remember that your game setup is going to be different from everyone else's. This includes your version of GTA (Steam, EGS, Retail), your patch version, your PC hardware components, your PC software, and your installed addons, ymaps, MLOs, trainers, replace mods, scripts, asi mods etc.

Which means please be as specific as possible when describing your problem.

This could include telling the forum your level of knowledge modding. If you're brand new to modding, you might not have installed all the necessary framework components such as SH5 and OpenIV properly. Also useful are your version of the game, what kind of mods are installed, and most importantly does your game run without mods.

And please don't randomly DM forum members for help. I myself get a few of these messages, and while I don't mind helping, remember that discussions about broken games or mods are better suited on the forums. This is so everyone, all forum members, can benefit from learning about an issue and also help participate in the remediation process.

Of help to the community helpers:

  1. Screenshots are very helpful to describe an issue or show a folder structure.
  2. Links. The exact name and download link of a problematic mod. Just don't post "none of my mods" work, or I have "a car" that doesn't load. Not helpful.
  3. Log files. Post the contents of text files such as Dlclist.xml or log files. Using pastebin is often best for extensive text posting.

Asking for Help on Forums

Troubleshooting and fixing gaming or computer issues virtually (remotely) can be pretty tricky and frustrating, both for the user and the person trying to help. When you have a problem you want to post on any forums, the more information you provide the easier it will be to help you find a solution. It's also respectful if before posting you search for a solution to your issue by searching a forum or the web in general with Google or your fav search engine.

Additional information that can be helpful:

1. Is your game Vanilla or Modded

Does your problem/issue persist if you play the game without any mods? We can call the unmodded game the vanilla version.  To answer this question is very simple: temporarily rename the file dinput8.dll in your game folder to dinput8.bak or whatever you want. Once finished, rename it back. Why do we ask this? Because if your game runs properly without any mods, then we know and you know that it is not a mods issue. It is a PC issue or vanilla game issue, which points to different solutions to explore such as your hardware and Windows configuration including drivers - or a corrupt game status.

2. The Problem Timing

Did the problem exist the first day you started modding or only after you installed certain mods/scripts? Or did it start immediately after a Rockstar Update? Providing this information will help understand if your installation itself was properly done or if something broke it down the line.

3. Your Modding Knowledge

Are you an experienced modder or did you just start? The answer can be helpful as well, it will help us as to what we suggest you try as a fix. If you've been doing this for 5 years we won't ask if you installed OpenIV properly.

4.   What Version are you using

While the platform is not that useful (Steam, Epic Games, Rockstar, Retail) the version is important. For example is your game fully updated to the latest patch or did you downgrade (revert) to a previous version of GTA 5.

5.   Specific Mods Issues

If you have issues with specific mods, and there are thousands of mods, it is best to start by looking at the comments and instructions on the mods page itself. Often you will see that other users have the same issue, or you might find fixes, and you can tag the author for help. This doesn't apply to ScriptHookV or mods such as Menyoo or Simple Trainer because almost everyone here will have these installed and might be able to provide help (and the knowledge base will be more extensive). As the title implies, be specific by providing an example link for a problematic mod, even if many aren't working as expected.
